PrEP is short for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. Essentially, PrEP is a pill that you take once a day, everyday, that reduces your risk of acquiring HIV by up to 99%.
PrEP is recommended for those at a higher risk for HIV as well as those looking to reduce their risk for HIV. To learn more about whether PrEP is right for you, complete our 1-min PrEP self-assessment.
If you take PrEP as recommended (daily), the medication helps stop HIV from spreading and taking hold. PrEP interferes with the pathways that HIV uses to cause permanent infection.
With daily use, PrEP is effective at reducing your risk of getting HIV from sex by 99%, according to the US Center for Disease Control (CDC).
Side effects with PrEP are low, but they vary by the drug you use.
With generic truvada, less than 10% of people experience PrEP side effects. And those that do have them typically only do for a short while as their body gets used to the drug, and then they subside.
With Descovy, side effects are lower. And similar to generic truvada, they subside for most people over time.
While side effects are certainly a concern, regular check-ins with your clinician ensure that you do well on PrEP and if you do experience side effects, they are managed.
Whether you have an active prescription to PrEP or are looking to renew, switching to Freddie is easy. Complete our short questionnaire and get book your free consultation today. Freddie services are 100% free.
Your first Freddie consultation will include an introduction between you and your provider. They will ask you some question about yourself, sexual behaviour, and drug use. These questions will also include some conversations about prevention, and sexual history. All of these are kept between you and your provider and are only asked for the purpose of making a PrEP assessment.
Before starting PrEP, you will have to do some lab work. After 30 days of being on PrEP, you will have to do some additional lab work to ensure your body is tolerating PrEP. For most patients, this is just a precaution to be fully sure everything is working well. After that initial checkup, you’ll need to get lab work done every three months. Your Freddie provider will walk you through the process.
Yes! Swabs will be mailed out with your prescriptions based on the advice of your clinician. Most persons on PrEP will receive two swabs so they can collect from their throat and their bum.
Freddie services are entirely free. With Freddie's unique financial assistance programs, the vast majority of patients pay $0 for PrEP, including those who currently have insurance co-pays. We'll work with you to find the lowest cost option.
